• the outlines, 20 pages, not 1. a cover, a contents page, then EIGHTEEN outlines: four darknesses, and each one comes plain or numbered, with or without the color bar along the top. this matters more with markers than with paint: alcohol markers are see-through, so a heavy line or a printed number will still be sitting there when you're done. print the faintest plain one to color on, keep the numbered one next to you as your map, and your finished piece has no numbers showing anywhere.
• every region carries a number, including the slivers too small to hold one, which get a thin pointer line drawn in from outside. nothing is left for you to guess at.
• the last two outlines sit over a red 1-inch grid, so you can copy the design onto stretched canvas or a sketchbook by hand. you are not stuck at printer size.
• the swatch card, and this is the one that matters if you own markers. every color prints as a true 1-inch square with its name, its exact hex and RGB, and its coverage in square inches. print it on the same paper you'll print your outline on, then swatch your own markers right beside each square and write the codes in. now you have a matching key made on your paper, with your printer, for your collection. no guessing off a screen, where nothing matches anyway.
• the color-by-color guide, one page per color, that color alone on the page. wondering where every #12 hides? turn to page 12. with markers this is the page you actually work from: you find every region of one color and lay them all down while the nib is still wet, which is exactly when alcohol markers blend cleanly into each other.
• the build-up guide, the same one page per color, but each page shows the whole painting as it will look once that color is down. you watch it arrive before you start.
• the finished preview in full color, plus a second copy with the numbers printed right on the colors, so you can check yourself halfway through without unrolling anything.
BEFORE YOU PRINT (markers and paper)
• print the swatch card first, on the exact paper you plan to use, and scribble a marker on it. that one test tells you two things at once: which of your markers match, and whether your printer's ink smears. some inkjet inks lift when alcohol hits them; laser and toner prints don't move. if yours smears, a print shop or a laser printer solves it for a dollar or two.
• marker paper or smooth cardstock beats copy paper. alcohol goes straight through thin sheets, so put a scrap behind it either way.
• colored pencils are happiest on toothier cardstock, and they want the medium outline, not the faint one.

SIZES, COLORS AND TURNAROUND
• sizes from 4x6 inches up to 24x36 inches, tell me where it's going and I'll recommend one. the big ones print at any print shop, or on a large-format printer if you can reach one
• between 10 and 40 colors depending on your photo. fewer colors if you're working from a small marker set, more if you own hundreds. tell me roughly what you have and I'll build to it.
• your swatch card tells you the piece count before you start (the kit in the photos is 26 colors and 1,810 pieces), and it flags in writing any piece smaller than a size-0 brush tip, which is about a fine-liner's width. those are the spots you'll want your smallest nib or a sharp pencil for.
• built for alcohol markers and colored pencils, and it works just as well with acrylics or watercolor if that's what you reach for
• this is a digital kit, nothing ships, nothing to wait for at the door
photos that paint best: good light, one clear subject, not too far away. when in doubt, send it over, I'll tell you honestly.
one photo rule: please send photos you took yourself, or ones you have the rights to use. professional photographers own their images, so a quick ok from your photographer covers a wedding or portrait shot.

bright, sharp photos with one clear subject paint best. phone photos are usually perfect. if your photo won’t make a good painting, I’ll tell you before I make the kit and we’ll pick another together.
no, that’s the whole point. every region has a number, every number has a color, and the guides show you the painting one color at a time. if you can color inside a line, you can do this. beginners are who I make this for, and so are people who own a beautiful marker set and never quite know what to draw with it.
a printer (or a quick stop at a print shop), decent paper, and the markers or pencils you already own. that's genuinely it: nothing to mix, no water, no brushes.
for alcohol markers, marker paper or smooth cardstock. for colored pencils, something with a bit more tooth. and print the swatch card first on whatever you pick, so you can test your own colors against it before you touch the outline.

yes, and you no longer have to work it out yourself. every printable kit now matches every swatch to four popular brands, markers and pencils both, by code and by name: ohuhu, copic, prismacolor premier and faber-castell polychromos. open the swatch card, find color 7, and it tells you which one to pick up.
the reference is measured rather than copied off a chart: nine independent hand-swatched sources across those four sets, swatched more than once across different papers and uses, never off a maker's chart. where nothing in a set comes close, the card says so rather than pointing you at something that is not right.
own something else? every color still comes with its exact hex and RGB, so you can check it against any brand's chart. and print the swatch card on the paper you plan to use and swatch your own markers next to the squares. that is the only test that really counts, because a color on a screen and the same color out of your printer are two different things.
you also don't need an exact match on all of them. the numbering runs lightest to darkest, so if your closest marker is a touch light, you can layer it darker. that direction always works, the other one never does.
this is about the printable kits, where you are matching real markers to a printed page. the ipad kits do not need it: the palette file loads the exact colors into procreate, so you tap the color rather than match it.
fewer than you'd think, and you can tell me first. most kits land between 10 and 40 colors, and I set that number when I build yours. working from a 24-marker set? say so and I'll build it to 24. own three hundred? I'll use the range and get you far more depth.

yes, and there’s a page in your kit for exactly that. the last two pages of your outline file come with a red inch-by-inch grid over them. draw the same grid lightly on your canvas, then copy the lines square by square, no tracing paper and no printer size limit. everything else in the kit still works: same numbers, same swatch card, same guides.
because painters want different things. some want the lines almost invisible so the finished painting has no outline showing at all, some want a firm line to paint up to, and some want every region numbered while others find that busy. you get four darknesses, each one plain or numbered, and each of those with or without the color bar printed along the top, and you print whichever one suits you. no charge for changing your mind.

the honest answers to “isn’t this free somewhere else?”, “why not just buy a coloring book?” and “why not the $60 mailed kit?” use these wherever the comparison comes up: an FAQ, a comment reply, a caption. the first item is the one to reach for most. and note the order: for marker and pencil people the coloring book is the real competitor, not the paint kit.
you already own the markers. you're just short of something worth using them on.
most color-by-number shops hand you one outline and a list of colors. here's what's actually in a hello paint kit:
• every color comes with its hex and RGB, so you can match it against ohuhu, copic, prismacolor, polychromos, or whatever's in your cup. and the swatch card names the closest one in all four of those sets, so you are not matching by eye at all.
• every color tells you how much of the picture it covers, in square inches. that is the difference between buying one marker and buying the wrong three: a color covering a tenth of a square inch does not need its own marker.
• eighteen outlines, not one. alcohol markers are see-through, so print the faintest plain one to color on and keep the numbered one beside you. no numbers show in the finished piece.

what they hand you is one picture with numbers on it. what is in the printable kit is eighteen outlines at four darknesses so the lines can vanish under marker, a page for every single color, the same picture again as it builds up color by color, and a swatch card that names the closest ohuhu, copic, prismacolor and polychromos for every color rather than leaving you to eyeball a hex code.
and the piece count and the small-piece warning are printed on the listing before you pay, because finding out afterwards that a kit has 28 pieces smaller than your finest nib is the thing that ruins an evening.

four tips before you start:
1. print the swatch card first, on the exact paper you plan to use. swatch your own markers next to the squares, write the codes in, and you've got a matching key for this painting. it also tells you in ten seconds whether your printer's ink smears under alcohol, which is worth knowing before the outline goes through.
2. then pick your outline. there are eighteen, and page 2 tells you which is which. four darknesses, each one plain or numbered, with or without the color bar along the top. with markers I’d print the faintest plain one to color on and keep a numbered one beside you as your map, so nothing shows through at the end. (the last two pages are the grid, only for copying onto canvas by hand.)
3. work in number order, 1 first. the colors run lightest to darkest on purpose, so you can always deepen a color later. you can go darker over light, never the other way.
4. keep the two guides open as you go. the color-by-color file shows one color alone per page (where does #12 go?), the build-up file shows the picture after each color lands (what will it look like next?). use whichever one your brain likes.

1. print at “actual size” or “100%”, never “fit to page”.
2. pick the paper size your kit was made for, it’s named on the kit’s cover sheet.
3. if your printer maxes out at letter size, a print shop can do larger sizes for a dollar or two.
if it still looks off, send me a photo of the print and I’ll sort it out with you.
great question, the honest answer is: send me the photo and I’ll tell you exactly how it will paint. most ideas work (pets, people, places, houses, cars). if something about the photo will fight the numbers, I’ll say so up front and we’ll find the version that works. no charge for asking.

on paint words: the shop is called hello paint and always will be, and "paint by number" stays in titles and tags because it's what people search. but in the body of anything, don't assume a brush. say color it in, fill it in, work through it. "the painting" is still fine for the finished thing, plenty of marker people call it that. "grab your paints", "mix", "brush", "let it dry" are not fine: our customer has none of those and picked us so they wouldn't need them.
brands we can name: ohuhu and copic for alcohol markers, prismacolor and polychromos for pencils. name them plainly, we're not affiliated with any of them and we don't pretend to be.
spelling: “color” everywhere, always. lowercase everywhere, always (even at the start of sentences), except the pronoun “I”, which stays capitalized (autocorrect fights it otherwise, and it reads as a typo lowercase). the only emoji is the wave 👋.
1. lowercase always, the name is “hello paint”, never “Hello Paint”, never “hellopaint” (except in handles). the one exception across all copy: the pronoun “I” stays capitalized.
2. no orange, anywhere, not in graphics, not in photo grading. it’s the one color the brand never wears.

• bright, even light beats a sunny window. overcast daylight through a big window is perfect.
• get down to their eye level. a photo taken from standing height mostly shows the top of a head.
• you want a catchlight, that little white spark in the eye. it is the single thing that makes a pet kit look alive.
• solid black or very dark fur is the one real problem: if the photo can't show the difference between his shoulder and his ear, the numbers can't either. a bit of side light fixes it. send it over and I'll tell you honestly.
• closer is better. a photo of a dog across a garden becomes a very small dog in a lot of grass.
• one pet per kit works best. two is fine if they're touching and both facing you.
